Foot Care During Pregnancy

If you’re an expectant mother needing help from foot doctors close to Chicago, we hope you’ll schedule an appointment with Mitchell Foot & Ankle, because our specialists are well aware of the foot problems that pregnancy can cause.

The issues with your feet occurring during pregnancy come primarily from two sources – weight gain and hormonal changes.

Average-sized women normally gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy, putting a lot of pressure on their feet. At the same time, the body is producing extra amounts of hormones, such as progesterone and relaxin.

Combined, weight gain and added quantities of certain hormones can create two problems for the feet, edema (swelling of the feet) and over-pronation, commonly known as flat feet.

Hopefully, the following suggestions will help.

Tips for dealing with edema

  • Keep your body well hydrated to flush your system of excess sodium and other waste products.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet with low sodium content.
  • Avoid long periods of sitting or standing and take breaks if you stand a lot.
  • Try to elevate your feet while sitting.
  • Walk regularly and exercise with moderation.

Exercises to help with over-pronation

Ankle circles – Sit on the floor with your calf muscles resting on a rolled up towel or blanket. Rotate your ankles in both directions for a total of two minutes. Try to repeat three times daily.

Standing calf raise – Stand next to a sturdy counter for balance and raise one foot off the floor. Rise up on the ball of your foot and toes with the other foot. Repeat 30 times with each foot, and aim for three sets daily.

We hope our suggestions help, and for the very best treatment from foot doctors close to Chicago, always call Mitchell Foot & Ankle to schedule your appointment.
