Learning About Achilles Tendonitis

Our foot doctor serving Beverly is ready to help treat your Achilles tendonitis. The Achilles tendon is the band of tissue that connects the calf muscles at the back of the lower leg to your bone. It’s the largest and strongest tendon in the body that allows us to stand on our toes when we walk, run, or jump. Unfortunately, even though the Achilles tendon has a lot of strength, it’s still susceptible to injuries like tendonitis and ruptures.

Achilles Tendonitis

When there is inflammation of the Achilles tendon, you most likely have tendinitis. This can happen from frequent activities, like running or walking. The result is pain and causes stiffness at the back of your heel.

Treating Achilles Tendonitis

Normally, your Achilles can be treated with RICE therapy: rest, ice, compression, and elevation. But in order to feel fully healed, it may take a few weeks. Some other treatments include:

  • Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter medications can lessen the pain of your Achilles tendon. If pain persists, you should see your podiatrist for prescription pain relievers.
  • Heat and Ice: When you alternate between heat and ice, pain may lessen over time.
  • Change of Footwear: You should always be wearing shoes with the correct support for your unique feet and ankles. Custom-made orthotics and certain heel lifts can help prevent Achilles tendonitis.
  • Physical Therapy: Sometimes, modifying activity and icing the source of pain isn’t enough. We recommend particular stretches and exercises that will help rehabilitate your tendon.

If you have a ruptured tendon, it’s possible that you might need surgery to reattach the Achilles tendon. Immobilization for several weeks to stay off your ankle is necessary for the healing process. If you feel you may have Achilles tendonitis, stop by your foot doctor serving Beverly, Mitchell Foot and Ankle, today. You can call to make an appointment at your earliest convenience.
